20 Things You Didn’t Know About Live And Let Die (1973)

18. A Sluggish Snake

Live and Let Die Bond Solitaire
MGM/UA

Recalling Sean Connery’s plight with a tarantula in Dr. No, Live And Let Die sees Roger Moore’s James Bond share his hotel bathroom in San Monique with a venomous snake.

Released through a window, the serpent weaves its way down the showerhead and curtain, and onto the floor, aiming for Bond’s foot. Catching sight of the reptile in a mirror, Double-0 Seven quickly fashions a makeshift flamethrower out his aftershave and a cigar, frying his slithering visitor alive.

This scene was filmed at Pinewood Studios in the winter of 1972 when the temperate was around 10 degrees Celsius. The cooler weather helped when filming the scene as, had it been much warmer, the snake would have moved much faster, making the scene more difficult to shoot and placing both Moore and those on set in much more danger.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
