20 Things You Didn’t Know About Octopussy (1983)

8. “Go Out And Get Him!” “Out There?!?”

The second unit shot the first scenes for the film over Kanab in Utah. These were of the final fight between Double-0 Seven and Kamal Khan's henchman, Gobinda atop Khan's Beechcraft C-45H Expeditor with Jake Lombard as James Bond and B.J. Worth as Gobinda. They had portrayed Bond and Jaws respectively in the stunning pre-credits sequence for Moonraker.

Close-ups of Roger Moore and Kabir Bedi were shot atop a mock-up of the aircraft at Pinewood Studios during the last ten days of filming.

The Beechcraft in Utah had been packed with explosives for the scene in which it crashes, killing Kamal Khan but, when the second unit sent it plunging over a cliff with a mannequin at the controls, it banked off course, flew in a wide circle over a freeway, and performed a perfect crash landing! John Richardson later shot the crash using miniatures instead at Pinewood Studios.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
