20 Things You Didn’t Know About Octopussy (1983)

4. “No Problem, This Is A Company Car!”

Not unlike the unconventional Citroën 2CV car chase in For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy steers away from using gadget-laden vehicles by featuring a chase involving auto rickshaws (or tuk-tuk taxis), even though the taxi used by James Bond and Vijay to escape from Gobinda and his thugs is "a company car".

Peter Lamont oversaw stunt driver, Rémy Julienne's customisation of six auto rickshaws at Pinewood Studios to ensure that they could reach speeds of 70 miles per hour before they were shipped overseas for filming.

However, the difficulty of managing the local populace in Udaipur during location filming was proven when a cyclist sailed in-between the tuk-tuk taxi carrying Bond and Vijay and the Jeep transporting Gobinda's men, completely oblivious to the action taking place around him. The unscheduled “stunt” was caught by two cameras and the filmmakers liked it so much that they kept it in the finished film.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
