While Brian Michael Bendis was devising Miles Morales, he thought it would be interesting to make the character as different as possible to the previous Spider-Man. Bendis brainstormed his ideas with Marvel's chief creative officer, Joe Quesada, saying,

"He's younger than Peter Parker, he's coming from a completely different background, a completely different world view. What if he was an African-American and how interesting it would be."

Although Bendis wasn't sure whether changing Spider-Man's ethnicity was the right move, he finalised his idea, after seeing an episode of Community, where Donald Glover wears Spider-Man pyjamas. Bendis recalled this moment in an interview with USA Today, saying:

"I saw him in the costume and thought, 'I would like to read that book.' So I was glad I was writing that book."

To pay tribute to Glover, there's an acknowledgement to the Childish Gambino rapper in Into the Spider-Verse. While Miles is catching up with Uncle Aaron, the TV in the background is showing the scene from Community which inspired Bendis.

Even though the attention to detail in this shot is staggering, a lot of people completely missed this reference.
