20 Things You Didn’t Know About Thunderball (1965)

2. The Creature Walks Among Us!

Whilst cameraman, Lamar Boren shot the underwater scenes, starting a long relationship with Eon Productions, they were directed by Ricou Browning, who had previously portrayed The Gill Man in underwater sequences in Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Revenge of the Creature (1955), and The Creature Walks Among Us (1956).

Browning made key contributions to the film, including rehearsing the underwater sequences on a barge and in a car park, and using hand signals to coordinate the action as vocal underwater communication was not possible at the time.

He also decided to use the green dye that emanates from Double-0 Seven's submersible propulsion unit in the final underwater battle to announce James Bond's arrival, rather than relying upon it as a smokescreen to shield him SPECTRE’s murderous divers.

The former Creature from the Black Lagoon later returned to direct the underwater scenes in Never Say Never Again.

Contributor

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
