20 Things You Didn’t Know About Whiplash

13. Taking The Phrase” Break A Leg” To The Next Level

Whiplash JK Simmons
Sony Pictures Classics

Acting is for the most part a demanding physical activity. This is due to factors such as the long shooting schedules and forms of physicality and/or skillsets that may be far removed from the actor’s own capabilities.

That said, some actors took the dedication to their craft a bit too far, and Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons fall into this not-so enviable position. The picture’s intense musical sequences saw Andrew drumming for so long that he began to form blisters and actually bleed in some cases. This was closer to reality than one would expect, as Teller did bleed while filming these exhaustive scenes.

Simmons himself had a nasty taste of intense acting after he cracked a rib during the scene where Andrew violently confronts Fletcher. These scenes may have achieved their desired intent but there was no need for the leads to endure these on-set accidents.
