If you're reading that fact above and wondering why we haven't been inundated with special releases and directors cuts a la Star Wars and Blade Runner, it's because such a feat was rendered impossible by Kubrick himself.

After the final version was sent away to distributors he demanded that all unused footage be destroyed. Quite why he insisted on this isn't known, but it's ensured that the first release remains the definitive one.
