Following the film's odd yet humorous events, it seems that Larry's life is turning around for the better. His son's Bar Mitzvah was successful, his marriage may have found a new lease in life, and may even get tenure at the university he teaches at.

However, this is a Coens-directed film so a bleak ending is guaranteed, with the film concluding on a shot of an incoming tornado heading towards Danny's school. The tornado at the end of the movie is somewhat based on historical fact as Southern Minnesota experienced an outbreak in 1967, right around the same time as the movie's setting.

The American Midwest and South was devastated by a series of tornados from late April to early May 1967 and in their wake, thirteen lives were lost and small Minnesotan towns were irreversibly affected by the destructive force of nature.
