Book-to-film adaptations are often tricky endeavors, and how key plot and character beats are handled is the difference between getting a stamp of approval from the author or leaving such a bad taste in their mouth that they never approve another re-telling of their work in the visual medium.

Fortunately, this was not the case with what would eventually become Arrival as author Ted Chiang was won over by Denis Villeneuve's effort. He mentioned that while the motion picture was a bit light on the original story’s scientific musings, it retained its emotional hook while still being its own artistic piece.

While the author is not too sure on which of his stories would translate well to the big screen, the hope is that what eventually sees the light of day is at least as good as Arrival.
