20 Things You Didn't Know About Batman Begins

11. Christopher Nolan Didn't Know A Lot About Batman

Batman Begins
Warner Bros.

If the director is adapting a comic book, you would safely imagine he or she is an avid fan. The director of Superman Returns, Bryan Singer, was obsessed with the iconic superhero and adored Richard Donner's film, Superman. The director of the Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi, has over 20,000 comics.

Bizarrely, Christopher Nolan wasn't very knowledgeable of Batman before accepting directorial duties.

Don't get me wrong. He loved the character but he didn't read the comics and never heard of Scarecrow or Ra's Al Ghul despite the fact they became the main villains of the film. His knowledge of the Caped Crusader mainly stemmed from the cheesy 1966 series, Batman. As far as Nolan was concerned, that's EXACTLY how Batman acted in the comics. He loved the show so much, Nolan watched it ten years after it went off the air. He had no idea Batman had been depicted asa dark, gritty character in the comics until many years later.

So, the big question is this; if Nolan wasn't a massive fan of Batman, why did he want to make a movie about him?

Well...
