Christopher Nolan thought the Batmobile's fantastical style wouldn't fit with his gritty Batman film and so, tried to make a vehicle that was unique and practical without looking cartoony.

The end result was the monstrously-sized automobile called the Tumbler. Because of its vast size, many viewers assumed trick photography or CGI was used to give the impression the automobile was moving faster than it was.

However, Nolan wanted the Tumbler to be as functional as possible. Despite being the size of a tank and weighing two tons, the vehicle could accelerate from 0-60mph in six seconds and had a maximum speed of 160mph.

It took $150,000 and a year of engineering to construct the first Tumbler. Nolan knew it was going to be so complex to build the vehicle that it was designed before anything else in the film. Nolan cut the timing pretty close since the prototype was completed only two weeks before it was needed for filming.

Viewers were won over by the Tumbler since they had never seen a vehicle like it before. In fact, one drunk driver hit the Tumbler in a panic, believing it was an invading UFO!
