20 Things You Didn't Know About Batman Returns

14. The Plot Was Meant To Be Completely Different

As with an awful lot of big blockbusters, a lot of stuff was chopped and changed during the production process on Batman Returns.

But in terms of big changes, few come more sizeable than reshaping the entire plot. That's exactly what screenwriter Daniel Waters did, however, when he was brought in to rejig the first draft of the script.

Originally, the plan was to have The Penguin team up with Catwoman as the dastardly duo went on a frantic treasure hunt in search of hidden riches buried somewhere deep in the heart of Gotham City. Think The Goonies, but with less lighthearted banter and a helluva lot more spandex.

Instead, of course, Waters decided on a plot that saw a nefarious business mogul back The Penguin's ludicrous bid for mayor, while Selena Kyle just sort of flitted about stealing scenes and throwing a cat-shaped spanner in the works for everyone. The narrative arc was actually inspired by two episodes of the original TV series back in the '60s - and it has to be said, the copious revisions made for a wonderfully inspired blockbuster that managed to toe the line between satire and terrifying farce brilliantly.
