19. Resurrecting An Original Scene

The opening scene in 2049 reintroduces us to the world of the Blade Runners, a world which has seen the collapse of the eco-system. Protein farms, owned by Niander Wallace, feed the masses and it's here that we are first introduced to Officer K, the Replicant government sanctioned assassin, sent to 'bring in' Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista), a Nexus 8 series android, now turned farmer.

Ridley Scott, director of the 1982 original, had intended to use this scene to introduce Deckard, but it was ultimately repurposed for the sequel, as per Slashfilm the director said:

"We decided to start the film off with the original starting block of the original film. We always loved the idea of a dystopian universe, and we start off at what I describe as a ‘factory farm’ – what would be a flat land with farming."
