Theron had a pretty good handle on her brand from the start, but that didn't prevent her from auditioning for Nomi in Showgirls, a role that went to Elizabeth Berkley. In fairness, beyond Showgirls, Paul Verhoeven is a well-respected filmmaker. The film itself even has its share of defenders.

She's spoken at length about "glamorous" roles and her standard distaste for them. "I played Britt Ekland, who is one of the most beautiful women alive. But I don't see so many [good glamorous roles]. You tell me one glamorous role that is in a good movie you have seen in the last ten years. My point is, it's not a case of wanting to be glamorous or not. It's about wanting to tell a good story. And the physical is at the bottom of the list for me. Your job, as an actor, is to be a clean canvas for your director, and you have to tell the story as authentically as possible."
