20 Things You Didn't Know About Christopher Nolan

19. He Doesn't Have A Mobile Phone Or E-Mail

As much as Nolan uses cutting-edge filmmaking tools to his advantage on his film sets, he doesn't have much time for more everyday technology.

Case in point, despite being one of the world's most sought-after directors, Nolan doesn't use a mobile phone unless absolutely necessary, nor does he have a personal e-mail account. He said:

"It's not that I'm a Luddite and don't like technology; I've just never been interested...When I moved to Los Angeles in 1997, nobody really had cell phones, and I just never went down that path."

He also prohibits use of mobile phones on-set, adding:

"Phones have become a huge distraction, and people work much better without them. At first it causes difficulty, but it really allows them to concentrate on what they're doing. Everybody understands. I’ve had a lot of crews thank me. When you're on a set, you're trying to create a bubble of alternate reality."

Further to his old-school attitude, he also continues to write plot outlines for his movies on a typewriter which was given to him by his father when he was 21. In a sure sign of sanity, though, he writes the actual scripts on a computer.
