20 Things You Didn't Know About Clueless
8. There's A Ridiculous Coen Brothers Reference
A seemingly insignificant one-liner sees Cher's father Mel (Dan Hedaya) tell her date Christian (Justin Walker), "Anything happens to my daughter, l got a .45 and a shovel. l doubt anybody would miss you."
At first glance it seems like nothing more than a joking reference to how protective Mr. Horowitz is of his darling daughter, but it's actually a sneaky nod to Hedaya's role in the Coen brothers' 1984 directorial debut, Blood Simple.
In the film, Hedaya's character Julian Marty is shot, beaten with a shovel, and buried. As much as Clueless is in step with pop-culture of its era, tipping its hat to the Coens of all people is still pretty unexpected.
