20 Things You Didn't Know About Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
3. “I Didn’t Know There Was A Pool Down There!”
Plenty O’Toole (Lana Wood) is memorably hurled from Bond’s Tropicana Hotel room window all but naked by Morton Slumber’s (David Bauer’s) goons (Marc Lawrence, Sid Haig, and Michael Valente) into the swimming pool below, without any of them actually realising that it is there. Later, when she visits Tiffany Case’s home, she is mistaken for the gem smuggler and left weighted down in the pool to drown, presumably by Mr Wint and Mr Kidd.
Lana Wood asked that no one other than essential cast and crew be present when she was hurled into the Tropicana's pool, but Las Vegas is the city that never sleeps, so plenty of onlookers were watching when she emerged from the pool.
Plenty’s demise was filmed at Kirk Douglas’s home in Palm Springs, California, but the experience was not very pleasant for Lana Wood, who spent most of her time weighted to the bottom of the pool.
Although a rope was strung across it so that she could lift herself out of the water to breathe, the weight kept slipping into the deep end. An experienced diver, Wood did not panic, but found it difficult to summon assistance from the cast and crew. Eventually, several crew members realised what was wrong and came to her aid, ensuring that she did not share Plenty O’Toole’s fate!
