20 Things You Didn't Know About Die Hard 2
19. Black & Decker Sued Fox For Cutting A Product Placement Scene
Prior to the film starting shooting, Fox worked out a product placement deal with hardware company Black & Decker, to feature their new Univolt cordless drill in the film.
The company paid the studio $20,000 for the scene, which was to feature John McClane using the drill to remove a vent grill at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Black & Decker also splashed out on a substantial marketing campaign to roll out alongside the film, only to find out three days before Die Hard 2's release that Harlin decided to cut the scene.
Naturally they weren't happy and quickly lawyered-up, demanding a stonking $150,000 in damages.
Fox eventually settled for a sum that's never been made public, yet considering that Black & Decker likely had a pretty water-tight case here, they probably got what they wanted.
