Though Die Hard was well received by most critics upon initial release, it did get a negative review from the legendary, late film critic Roger Ebert, who gave it a mere two stars, complaining that the police characters - especially Chief Dwayne T. Robinson (Paul Gleeson) - were too idiotic.

In a typically heated review for his At the Movies TV show, however, fellow critic Gene Siskel vehemently disagreed with him.

In subsequent years, Ebert went on to praise the three sequels that followed, though sadly passed away before the release of the fifth film, A Good Day to Die Hard, which he would've surely panned.
