20 Things You Didn't Know About Django Unchained

16. It Was A Painful Shoot For Leonardo DiCaprio

Django Unchained

The performances in Django were widely praised but Leonardo DiCaprio received extra credit for the behind-the-scenes stories of his dedication to the craft, throwing himself in so readily that he injured himself in the process. After DiCaprio's Calvin Candie character discovers he's been deceived by Schultz and Django, he bangs his fist on the table as a show of anger.

DiCaprio accidentally smashed a glass while doing so and cut his hand in the process. Ever the professional, he carried on with the scene. Later, he smears his blood on the face of Broomhilda. This wasn't DiCaprio's actual blood but he had the idea to use fake blood for the disrespectful act.

This wasn't the only Django-related injury that DiCaprio acquired. During rehearsal for that scene, the hammer he was threatening Kerry Washington's Broomhilda with broke and hit him on the head. To avoid this happening again during filming, DiCaprio used a foam hammer and the hammer sounds were added in in post-production.
