Quentin Tarantino has a great collection of villains in his back catalogue. As despicable as most of them are, as deplorable their actions, they're also kind of fun in a way and that makes them oddly likeable. Calvin Candie isn't one such villain.

Even Tarantino himself didn't like Candie and he has gone on the record to say he's his most hated creation. Speaking to Playboy, Tarantino said: "He's the first villain I've ever written that I didn't like. I hated Candie, and I normally like my villains no matter how bad they are."

We would imagine that his hatred is based on the fact that there were men like Candie in the antebellum South who committed such heinous acts. When a character is rooted in history and reality, it's hard to dismiss their behaviour as cartoonish. Candie's actions seem so over the top that it's hard to believe people like that existed.
