12. Gary Sinise Had A Special "Magic Wheelchair" To Hide His Legs

Though much of Gary Sinise's transformation into amputee war veteran Lt. Dan is achieved through jaw-dropping visual effects, there was also a clever practical solution for shots where Dan wasn't required to move around the room.

Late magician Ricky Jay helped the production design a special wheelchair with a false bottom within which Sinise could fold his legs, giving a convincing impression that he was in fact a below-the-knee amputee.

However, due to the physical strain this placed on Sinise's legs, he was only able to sit in the chair for roughly 10 minutes at a time. And yet, looking at the final movie, you'd never guess there was any in-camera trickery going on during these scenes.
