20 Things You Didn't Know About From Russia With Love (1963)

1. "You Won’t Be Needing This, Old Man."

One of the standout moments in From Russia With Love is the brief, but visceral battle in a compartment aboard the Orient Express between Double-0 Seven and Red Grant - a moment that is built up throughout the film.

The sequence made a minimal use of stunt performers and instead thrust both Sean Connery and Robert Shaw right into the action with stuntmen, Bob Simmons and Jack Cooper only occasionally standing in for them.

The scene was choreographed by Terence Young himself, who had been a boxer during his days at Cambridge University, and took three weeks to film under the supervision of stunt coordinator, Peter Perkins. In fact, at times the fight was so realistic that it caused some concern on the set.

It is one of the most successful hand-to-hand fights in the Bond franchise, having often been used for inspiration in similar sequences in other films (including other Bond films), but rarely matched for its authenticity and entertainment value.

Indeed, Steven Spielberg was so enamoured with the sequence that he asked both Robert Shaw and Sean Connery about it when he directed them in Jaws (1975) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) respectively. Indeed, Shaw’s performance as Red Grant led Spielberg to hire him as the unsettling fisherman, Quint in Jaws, whilst Connery was cast as Indiana Jones's (Harrison Ford's) father because no one other than James Bond could have convincingly portrayed the archaeologist’s dad.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
