20 Things You Didn't Know About Halloween (1978)

3. Michael Myers Is Not Actually Disfigured

According to John Carpenter, fans of the film often tell him how shocked they are to (briefly) see the disfigured Michael Myers revealed towards the end of the film.

As audiences will recall, The Shape is throttling Laurie Strode on the landing at the Doyle residence when Dr. Loomis rushes upstairs. Laurie manages to fend The Shape off for a moment by pulling off his mask, revealing the 21-year-old Michael Myers.

Carpenter considers it to be a great example of the power of suggestion in films that audiences see a disfigured Michael Myers (portrayed by Tony Moran) in this scene because, in truth, what they are actually seeing is a handsome young man with an injured left eye from where Laurie thrust a coat hanger into his mask; he is not actually disfigured at all.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
