20 Things You Didn't Know About Inglourious Basterds

12. Burning Down The House

In the final act of Inglourious Basterds, Shosanna Dreyfus burns her own movie theatre and the entire German high command with it. Playing with fire is, well, playing with fire and of course extremely dangerous.

In rehearsal, everything seemed to go according to plan - the fire burned to a scary but manageable 400 degrees centigrade - in the actual take, the fire burned to a staggering 1,093 degrees. The giant swastika hung over the screen was not meant to fall down, but looked great when it did. Tarantino himself was perched on a crane wearing a fireproof suit just in case.

In an interview with the Huffpost, Eli Roth described the chaotic set piece:

“Yeah, we were almost killed doing that sequence... [The flames] were spreading so exponentially... They said if we were in there another 15 seconds, the stage we were on would have collapsed and we all would have been killed.”
