20 Things You Didn't Know About Psycho

10. The First Trailer Is One Of The Longest In Movie History

Psycho Janet Leigh
Paramount Pictures

Though for decades the accepted length for movie trailers has been around two or three minutes, for Psycho's release Hitchcock cut together a six-and-a-half minute teaser of-sorts.

The trailer was filmed after principal photography was completed and saw Hitchcock take viewers on a tour around the grounds of the Bates Motel and residence, culminating in a glimpse of the shower scene.

But because Janet Leigh wasn't available to shoot this tease, Hitch instead deferred to her co-star Vera Miles - who played Marion's sister Lila in the film - kitted out in a wig to more closely resemble Leigh, while the Psycho typeface obscured her facial features.

Good luck convincing a cinema nowadays to show an almost seven-minute trailer for any movie.
