20 Things You Didn't Know About Psycho

5. Hitchcock Apparently Hated The Performance Of John Gavin

Hitchcock was always a great actors' director, though in the case of Psycho, there's one performer whose work he was reportedly incredibly unsatisfied with.

That actor is John Gavin, who played Marion's boyfriend Sam Loomis in the movie. According to author Stephen Rebello, Hitch would refer to Gavin as "the stiff," due to his frustration with Gavin's cold, detached acting method.

The film's costume designer Rita Riggs added that the crew noticed an emphasis on the back of Gavin's head when viewing raw dailies of the shoot, suggesting Hitchcock de-emphasised Gavin's role as much as possible for the final cut of the movie.
