20 Things You Didn't Know About Psycho

3. Hitchcock Hated The Psychiatrist Scene As Much As Everyone Else

Psycho Janet Leigh
Paramount Pictures

As beloved as Psycho is by audiences and critics alike, the climactic scene in which Dr. Fred Richman (Simon Oakland) basically drops an exposition dump about Norman's mental state is largely accepted to be the worst part of the movie.

But Hitchcock himself wasn't a fan of it either, deeming it boring but agreeing to shoot the scene after studio higher-ups wanted to give audiences a breather where the more "complex" aspects of the plot were fully explained.

Perhaps to less cinema-literate audiences in 1960 it might've passed muster, though viewed today with six decades of thrillers inspired by it, it's a horribly clumsy scene in an otherwise masterful movie.
