13. The Sound Cues Are A Link To The Past

One way in which the Scott Pilgrim movie can tap directly into its millennial audience's nostalgia for videogame classics that a book could never achieve is through creative sound design.

So, of course it comes as no surprise that Scott Pilgrim is packed with videogame sounds like the triumphant "K.O!" when Scott defeats Gideon, which is taken from Street Fighter Alpha 3.

More than any other gaming classic, though, it is The Legend Of Zelda that most influences Scott Pilgrim's soundscape. As soon as Hader's voiceover introduces our hero, the movie transitions into further setting up the characters with a whole heap of Zelda sounds. Scott and Wallace's home appears to the intro music from the SNES Zelda game A Link To The Past, while the whistle from the N64 Ocarina Of Time sounds as a caption pops up with Scott's stats.

Later in the movie, there is an extended Zelda musical interlude when Scott's hallway fantasy with Ramona is accompanied by the iconic Great Fairy's Fountain theme, which also first appeared in A Link To The Past.

Wright even wrote a letter to Nintendo calling this music "the nursery rhyme of this generation" in order to convince them to allow its usage.

Away from sound effects, there's also a visual Zelda reference in how Gideon's triple G record label logo is just an upside-down Triforce symbol.
