16. There's WAY More CGI Than You Think
In recent years, Scorsese has proven himself a master of integrating practical sets with digital embellishments, and while nobody will watch Shutter Island assuming that the titular locale was realised entirely practically, there's far more CGI in the final film than anyone would reasonably expect.
Yes, it's not terribly surprising that the exteriors of Shutter Island were achieved through a combination of practical locations, miniatures, and green screen compositing, but more unexpected is just how many of the Ward C interiors were shot on partial sets completed in post-production (see above).
This approach was reportedly a result of the technical complexities of building and lighting such large sets, and impressively enough, the results are near enough seamless in the final film.
