20 Things You Didn't Know About Solo: A Star Wars Story
15. Darth Maul Wasn't Included In The Original Script
One of the most crowd-pleasing moments in the entire movie is Darth Maul's totally unexpected cameo at the end.
Many fans were impressed at Lucasfilm's ability to keep the massive spoiler under wraps for so long, but as it turns out, Maul's appearance wasn't in the original script and added fairly late in production.
Originally, the script simply listed the leader of Crimson Dawn as "Boss," leaving the door open for one of many fan-serving characters to fill the void.
However, director Ron Howard himself lobbied hard for Maul to take the spot, resulting in original Maul actor Ray Park being drafted in to physically portray the character yet again, while the voice was provided by Sam Witwer, who has previously voiced him on both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series.
Hilariously, the dialogue was recorded first and Park was then quietly driven to Pinewood Studios in a limousine with tinted windows to record his role, in a cordoned-off part of the studio no less to assure maximum secrecy. It certainly worked.
