Though Anthony Daniels was always going to reprise his iconic role of C-3PO in the film, J.J. Abrams originally planned for Daniels to only provide the voice for Threepio, with the physical on-set role presumably being played by a younger actor.

But Daniels, who after the prequels - where he only voiced the character - was seemingly itching to get back into the suit, lobbied hard to play the character on-set also.

Abrams ultimately relented and a more lightweight suit was designed for Daniels to wear which allowed him both greater comfort and mobility. Daniels wasn't best pleased, though, with the controversial decision to give C-3PO a red arm for most of the film.
