The late, great Jim Henson and his legendary Creature Shop produced the movie's costume effects in London in just 18 weeks, with Henson professing that the effects were the most complex he had ever personally worked with.

However, The Muppets creator later expressed disappointment at how violent TMNT ended up being, reportedly calling the film "excessive, pointless, and not his style" despite being happy to have helped further the art of animatronics as a result.

Henson got involved with the film - and also had his son Brian hired as a second unit director - largely thanks to director Steve Barron, who had previously worked on Henson's 1987-1988 TV series The Storyteller.

Tragically this would be Henson's major final cinematic project, as he died less than two months after its release.

Worse still, when the film's sequel included a tribute to Henson, Henson's children were said to consider the credit "inappropriate" due to his mixed feelings about working on the original.
