In addition to resulting in a trimmer Michael Scott for The Office's second season, the movie also changed how Michael was characterised following the shaky reception to season one.
The producers were worried that Michael was coming across as too nasty and menacing, when they wanted him to be more likeable and sympathetic.
In the end, Carell's performance in this film helped the producers to subtly re-shape Michael in season two into a more affable - if still fundamentally goofy - character.
Fun fact: the Benihana's seen during Andy's date with Trish (Catherine Keener) is actually the very same one seen in The Office's season three episode "A Benihana Christmas."
