20 Things You Didn't Know About The Exorcist
14. The Demon Depicted In The Movie Is Also A Protector Of Mothers And Children
Pazuzu is the name of the demonic antagonist that features in The Exorcist and all subsequent entries in the franchise.
Whilst Pazuzu is very much considered an evil entity in the ancient Mesopotamian religions he appears in, he isn't all bad. Pazuzu is an eternal rival of a malicious goddess that is said to harm mothers and their children during childbirth. Pazuzu's name was said to be invoked by mothers to protect them from harm until their children were safely delivered.
In addition, Pazuzu is said to protect humans from calamities such as plagues, and misfortune caused by other demons. Pazuzu is basically the John Wick of the world of ancient Mesopotamian demonology. The merest mention of his name is enough to scare off some of the lesser demons, and once summoned he will chase off any other demon silly enough to still be in the room.
Not exactly the Satanic antagonist he is made out to be in the Exorcist.
