20 Things You Didn’t Know About The Nightmare On Elm Street Franchise
6. Heather Langenkamp’s Boyfriend Came Up With The Freddy Tune
One of the most iconic elements of A Nightmare on Elm Street is the Freddy nursery rhyme. “One, two Freddy’s coming for you,” the children sing in the original movie and then throughout the sequels. Who came up with that? Probably director Wes Craven, right?
Nope.
Craven did write the lyrics to it, but when he put the rhyme in the screenplay, he had no idea what the tune would be. Luckily, actress Heather Langenkamp’s boyfriend happened to be a musician, and while they were sitting around the piano after reading the screenplay, he came up with a perfect tune to set Craven's lyrics to.
The rhyme ended up influencing the actual score of the film, too, with composer Charles Bernstein saying he tried to work the melody into his theme. So really, Heather Langenkamp’s boyfriend may be the unsung hero of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, writing this brilliant song that stuck with everyone all these years later, and he did it while not even actually working on the movie.
