Once they had their star, Donner set about the impossible: dealing with child actors. Child actors, in recent years, have arguably gotten better - Stranger Things being an excellent example - but corralling them on set will always plague productions.

Donner even toyed with the idea of casting a young girl, as the boys who auditioned were too hard to control. Harvey Stephens, all of 5 during shooting, got the role when Donner asked him to just unload on the filmmaker. He was looking for someone who could pull off the fury of the tantrum young Damien Thorn has on the way to church.

Stephens was unrestrained, hitting Donner in the balls and punching all around.
