20 Things You Didn't Know About The Shining

19. There Was A Different Original Ending

Deleted endings are nothing new to Hollywood. It tends to take actually scripting, storyboarding, and filming the original ending you intend for you or someone else to go "yeah no, this isn't working, we need to rethink this". But of course, the original ending to The Shining is just as bizarre as everything else about this damn movie.

The original ending takes place after jack dies in the snow. While in the hospital, Wendy is visited by Ullman, who brings some disturbing news. Following up on her story, the police searched that entire damn hotel from top to bottom, but apparently found nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever.

The film fades to black, with text informing that the Overlook Hotel would survive this tragedy like it had before, and that nothing about its business model had really changed. Understandably, the ending was changed, as Kubrick felt that it was just a twist too far, and that the narrative was just fine without it. Ultimately for the best, as the ending we got is legendary all on its own.
