13. Miranda Otto's Real-Life Pregnancy Was Worked Into The Script

War of the Worlds 2005 Tom Cruise
Paramount Pictures

Miranda Otto has a small supporting role in the film as Ray's ex-wife Mary Ann, but the actress was originally forced to turn the part down due to falling pregnant.

However, Spielberg wanted Otto enough for the role that he agreed to modify the script in order to make her pregnancy a small part of the storyline.

Given the strong family thematic that runs through so many of the director's movies, it's little surprise that he of all filmmakers would be willing to incorporate a real-life element such as this.
