20 Things You Didn't Know About Waterworld
19. Kevin Costner Clashed With Director Kevin Reynolds During Shooting
It's no secret that Waterworld's production was, to be kind, an absolute nightmare, exacerbated by the constant bickering between star Costner and director Kevin Reynolds.
Reynolds was offered to direct upon the insistence of Costner after the pair worked together on Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, despite the fact that the two also clashed during production of that movie.
Producer Lawrence Gordon ultimately had to act as a mediator when they met to discuss Waterworld, eventually resulting in Reynolds accepting the gig.
But creative differences flared throughout shooting of Waterworld, with numerous reports stating that Costner effectively tried to co-direct the movie.
This eventually resulted in Reynolds walking off the project during post-production, leaving Costner to complete the editing process himself.
Reynolds said of the friction, "Kevin Costner should only star in movies he directs. That way, he can work with his favorite actor and favorite director." Ouch.
Despite the disagreements, the two did reunite almost 20 years later for the acclaimed History Channel mini-series Hatfields & McCoys.
