In addition to acting as symbols of hope for a dying world, the young mother and baby's names hold relevance to their characters.

Dylan is a Welsh name given to boys and girls that means "son of the sea" or "born from the ocean". Kee sounds similar to Chi, which is of course the life giving force in many Eastern cultures and religions.

The film's closing moments adds a level of credence to the characters' names as the North Sea (where the final scene is set ), a large water body may represent life and also serves as a sobering backdrop to many immigrant experiences (a prominent narrative thread in the film).
