20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Logan
7. Third Time’s Definitely The Charm
One of the franchise’s nadirs, X-Men Origins: Wolverine was a forgettable misfire that disrespected comic book lore in a cynical attempt at franchise expansion. 2013’s The Wolverine was an improvement over its much-maligned predecessor but felt like it was far from reaching its full potential.
With a poorly received first instalment and intriguing but flawed second, the desire to make a compelling final entry drove James Mangold and Hugh Jackman in the early days of Logan’s production.
The reception to Origins affected Jackman so much that he almost retired from the role. In addition to this, Mangold mentioned that they felt obligated to step up from the previous instalments and steer clear from frequently trodded tropes as much as possible. Fortunately, the studio did not stand in the way of Mangold’s reinvention and this newfound creative freedom worked immensely in the film’s favour.
