It's safe to say The Godfather is the defining movie centred around the mafia. Although there had been many movies prior revolving around gangsters, Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation changed the way the mob was perceived since it depicted them as family men, parents, and children.

Even though The Godfather is the most famous mafia film ever, the word 'mafia' is never uttered once in the entire 175-minute runtime! Joe Colombo, who was one of the leaders of American Mafia's Five Families, threatened to obstruct the production, since he was worried The Godfather would besmirch his way of life. After speaking with the producer, Al Ruddy, Colombo agreed to leave the movie shoot alone if the word 'mafia' was never used.
