20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alfred Hitchcock Movies

7. Chocolate Syrup And Watermelon - Psycho

North By Northwest
Paramount Pictures

In order to make fake blood, filmmakes typically use a mix of corn starch and red food colouring for a realistic appearance. But for Psycho – a movie shot in black and white cinematography – there was a little bit more creative freedom.

Hitchcock made the executive decision of using Bosco chocolate syrup so that the blood looked thicker and more vivid.

Another food item which helped create the infamous shower scene, was a large fruit. The slashing sound you hear when Marion Crane is being gruesomely murdered is actually a watermelon being repeatedly stabbed.
