As Barbara and Adam Maitland (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) have their fateful car accident at the start of the movie, take a peek at their car's bumper sticker once the vehicle hits the water.

The sticker reads "I brake for animals" - a rather ironic declaration given that the accident is in fact caused by the duo swerving out of the way of a dog rather than slamming on the brakes.

Granted, hitting the brakes would've probably had a not-great outcome for the dog, so you can appreciate why they swerved instead, even if it ultimately resulted in their deaths.
