One source of visual inspiration, that's actually incredibly obvious when you think about it, concerns the Tyrell mansion. Or rather, the enormous bedroom of the great pyramid that Tyrell whiles away his days in.

When looking for some real-world examples of where exactly men with a justified god complex spend their time, Ridley Scott's research took him to none of than the Pope. As a result, the great penthouse seen in the movie is largely inspired by its equivalent in the Vatican City.
