20 Things You Somehow Missed In Forrest Gump

1. Dorothy The Bus Driver Quits Smoking, Chews Gum Instead

Forrest Gump Tom Hanks
Paramount

The film is bookended by scenes in which young Forrest and his son, Forrest Jr. (Haley Joel Osment), take the bus on their first days to school.

Both buses are driven by a no-nonsense driver by the name of Dorothy (Siobhan Fallon Hogan), and while the joke seems to be that this woman is still driving the same bus route for decades, it actually goes one layer deeper.

N ote that in the early scene with young Forrest she's smoking a cigarette, though amusingly when we catch up with her again about 30 years on, she's no longer smoking but instead maniacally chewing a big wad of gum.

If that isn't character development, what is? Good for you quitting the cancer sticks, Dorothy.
