20 Things You Somehow Missed In Gladiator

12. Maximus' Armour Alludes To Two Famous Cowboy Heroes

During the course of the film, Maximus explains to young Lucius that the horses on his armoured chestpiece are named 'Argento' and 'Scatto'.

In the director's commentary of the film, Scott and Crowe explain that the names are a tribute to the western heroes of their movie-going youth. Argento is Italian for 'silver', and Scatto is Italian for 'click' or 'latch', or, in other words, a trigger.

Silver was the name of The Lone Ranger's famous white stallion, and Trigger was Roy Rogers' palomino stallion. Both of the cowboys were mainstays of radio, matinee movies, TV, and comic books for decades.

It's a cute touch that two famous fictional horse-riding heroes made their way to the chest of their ancient equivalent.
