Despite setting the record for the number of scale models used in the making of a movie, Independence Day did hilariously cut one corner when it came to the destructive effects work.

While all the cars destroyed during the initial alien attack are either real vehicles hollowed out for stunt work or smaller models made especially for the scene, the fire engine that can be seen flying through the air is, in fact, a toy truck bought for a few dollars from a nearby store.
