20 Things You Somehow Missed In Raiders Of The Lost Ark

11. Pat Roach Has Two Roles

Pat Roach is well-known to appear in the film as the massive Luftwaffe mechanic who attacks Indy whilst he is attempting to hijack the Nazis' flying wing.

However, it is not so well known that Roach, a professional wrestler, also appeared in the film as the Giant Sherpa during the blazing fight between Indy and Toht's men in Marion's Nepalese bar.

Roach's appearances in Raiders led to a lasting career with Indiana Jones, as he returned as an imposing Thugee guard in 1984's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and as a Gestapo officer who tracks Indy to a Zeppelin in 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Roach's scenes in Last Crusade had originally been longer, but slowed the film down and therefore ended up on the cutting room floor. Rest assured though that his character would have had another very dramatic fate in his efforts to stop Dr. Jones.

Igor Jijikine's Colonel Antonin Dovchenko in 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a reference to Roach's contribution to the series and its memorable fight sequences, as Roach had sadly passed away in 2004.

Contributor

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
